vod.ing / features / chat overlay rendering

Drop a real chat overlay on top of any clip.

A transparent MOV or a flat MP4 of chat for the exact seconds of your clip. Animated 7TV, BTTV, FFZ emotes preserved. Render speed multipliers cut wait time.

The settings you actually want

Width, height, font size, font color, background color, transparency, FPS, and render speed multiplier. No buried menus.

A standalone free tool for this one job

Just need a chat overlay and nothing else? The free chat overlay renderer is a separate utility: pick a 3 minute window of any public Twitch VoD and download an MP4 of the chat. 10 free renders a day, no payment. It's not a trial of the editor, just a quick single-purpose tool.

What the output looks like

Chat scrolls in the exact order it scrolled live on Twitch with the original message timing preserved. Usernames keep their Twitch color, badges appear next to the name, and emotes render at the correct size. Animated emotes loop on the same cadence they do on Twitch. The result drops cleanly on top of the source clip in any video editor.

Drop it into your NLE

DaVinci Resolve: drag the MOV onto V2 above your clip. Resolve auto-detects the alpha channel and composites the chat layer over the source. Use the Inspector panel's Transform → Position to nudge the overlay; no keyframes needed because the chat overlay is full-duration. If colour management is set to "Resolve YRGB Color Managed", the overlay's pre-multiplied alpha just works.

Premiere Pro: drop the MOV on V2, right-click → Modify → Interpret Footage and confirm "Straight (Unmatted)" alpha if the edges look haloed. Final Cut Pro X: drag onto the timeline above your clip; FCP picks up the alpha automatically. Adobe After Effects: same as Premiere for alpha mode. The MOV is QuickTime ProRes 4444 with alpha so every modern NLE recognises it.

Before vs. after: what you save

Before: open VoD in OBS or a downloader, scrub to the moment, screenshot or screen-capture the chat sidebar, manually crop and key out the background in your NLE, hope the emotes look acceptable. Per clip that is fifteen to twenty minutes of fiddly work and the result still looks like a screen capture.

After: paste the clip start/end into Voding's render dialog, wait ninety seconds, drop the MOV on V2. Animated emotes still animate, badges are pixel-perfect, timestamps match the source video frame-for-frame. The same compilation reel that took an evening of overlay work takes thirty minutes.

About chat overlay rendering
